We Know about fishing at Currane Lodge, We draw our knowlege and expert advice from the experience of 6 generations of our family having been involved in providing fishing guides, boats, tackle and local knowlege to the visiting angler.

We have direct access to the lake just 300 meters from our front door. Currane is one of the finest salmon and seatrout fishery systems in Ireland. Being the jewel in the crown, the fact that it is here that 95-98% of all specimen seatrout caught in Ireland are caught.

There is a drying room for your convience. Pack lunches are provided , groups are catered for . Evening meals are provided for groups of 5 or more. Guides, boat hire arranged. Here is the perfect place for your fly fishing experience. Gallons of hot water for your power shower. Weather forecast printouts available each evening. Lough Currane

The biggest lake in the system, it measures 4 miles x 2 miles at its widest points. Salmon and large numbers of seatrout run up the short Currane river (400 yards) to reach the lake.

Flyfishing is the most popular form of fishing with some trolling in early season
For spring fishing hooks 6-10 and 8-10 for summer fishing. fly patterns to be reccommended The Hairy Mary, Bluecharm, Thunder and Lightening, and shrimpfly.

Seatrout can be found all over the lake recommended fly sizes.are 8-14 and patterns such as black pennel, watsons fancy, connemara black, peter ross and the most important bibio.

Lough Derriana

Derriana is the top lough on the Currane system and contains brown trout of a higher than average size for non limestone lakes There are also salmon and large sea trout from as early as April. Set in stunning scenery there are 2 boats for hire on the lake.

Lough Na Mona

A short distance up the currane / Cummeragh system , the lough produces many of the very large seatrout for which the area is famous. The lough contains many free rising brown trout, size 6-12 oz . There are 2 boats for hire on the lake

Lough Cloonaghlin

Neighbouring Namona, Cloonaghlin sits on the same Cummeragh tributary which eventually flows into Lough Currane. Although noted for the occasional salmon , it is best known as a seatrout and brown trout fishery. There are 2 boats for hire on the lake.

Hill Loughs

For adventerous anglers there are dozens of hill loughs on the Waterville system. All contain unique strains of free rising brown trout , and some connected to to the main upper lakes can hold large seatrout. It is reccommended that anglers intending to visit the area con sult ordance survey ( Map no 83 discovery series, 1:50,000) and Peter o Reilleys book Loughs of Ireland.

The Cummeragh

The Cummeragh drains a catchment of 46 square miles, including ten loughs into lough Currane. Water levels on the five mile strech of river hold well for several days after a spate. Producing occasional spring salmon, the river is better known for summer grilse fishing that extends through to the end of september.It is also an excellent seatrout river and fishes well from July onwards.

Rivers The Inny

The catchment is a long narrow mountain valley of some 47 square miles and the fishing which can be excellent , is usually confined to about 24 hours following a spate. Regarded mainly as a grilse fishery, it also gets a good run of seatrout from April and smaller fish throughout the summer

The world famous Butlers Pool is contained within a short fisery of about 400 yards , which dreains Lough Currane and the entire Waterville system into the Atlantic Ocean. all fish entering the system must pass through this short fishery. Spring fish tend to run straight into the lough and it is better known as a grilse fishery with enormous runs of seatrout throughout July and August. reccommended fly patterns, Jungle cock spider , bibio, bloody butcher, silver doctor. Salmon fly patterns include Stoats Tail, shrimp patterns.
